THE ARTISTIC RESIDENCE

Nicolas GUYOT in residence from May 24 to June 20, 2021 at Blesle, Maison de l'artisanat.

The residency, a demand renewed on multiple occasions by artists wishing to spend more time in our region and benefit from its exceptional setting.

The selected artist will benefit from accommodation, a workshop and a grant from May 24 to June 20, 2021. An exhibition of his work will be visible at the Maison de l'artisanat de Blesle.

Nicolas Guyot is a photographer who uses development techniques allowing him to transpose photographic images on different media, such as wood or canvas.

He works in a plastic way a process based on silver bromide, which, in conjunction with other elements, gives body and texture to the photographs. Photographs of faces and landscapes improvised through light and chemistry at the time of development. he manufactures these media and his chemicals himself.

Behind the face and the landscape, reads a quest for the other, for another to be captured in the first place by the objective and which continues to evolve during the stage of development. In the darkroom, Nicolas Guyot manipulates his images a great number of times until the work makes the original photograph disappear to give birth to a new image. Thanks to this technical and chemical process, the work on the image is detached from the photograph, and the plastic proposal, original and moving, takes possession of the figure. In other words, his job is to paint with light.

Far removed from contemporary photographic canons, his images are free from the incandescence of digital photography. The shiny aspect has no place in his photos which flee the artifices aiming to impress the eye, because they seek to reach the brain and the senses, without any other tool than the alchemy of film photography and ancestral development techniques.

Canvases with a poetic aura are thus invented, with a historiographical background, faded for some, opaque for others, emerged like dreams, detached from their own history, like independent shadows which, with the help of spectator, become figures.

" The photo is the material, the painting is the way: My photographs are silver bromide paints. The supports are made and prepared specifically, each image is a unique painting. It is a physical work, plastic and pictorial.
